Dalhousie Fitness Centre

Institutional

Back

FBM, working in association with MJM Architects of Toronto, worked with the university’s students, stakeholders and the surrounding community to develop a strategy to revitalize the existing Dalplex facility - the sports and fitness centre based at Dalhousie University in south end Halifax.

The goal was to reimagine Dalplex as the campus' health and wellness centre, in order to create an inclusive and versatile state-of-the-art facility, open and accessible to all students.

Conceived as an addition to the existing Dalplex complex, the new facility serves as the new main entrance to the entire facility sequence from South Street and the Dalplex parking area.

The building, currently seeking LEED Gold certification, encompasses approximately 5,800 square metres over two levels, including a mid-level entry and upper level mechanical mezzanines, and a small renovated area at the connection to Dalplex.

Change rooms located along the lower level concourse are designed to serve the new fitness facility addition and the Dalplex field house programs. An open stairway and elevator located near the end of the concourse provide access to the upper level multipurpose program rooms and very large main fitness hall. The generous 18 feet of clear height through the program studios and fitness hall produce a light and airy environment designed to accommodate programs such as aerobics, Zumba, martial arts, dance and yoga. The open fitness hall has been zoned for cardio, free weights, resistance, and core training.
