FBM joins EllisDon Infrastructure Healthcare team

FBM is pleased to have been selected by EllisDon to partner on the design of the new Bayers Lake Community Outpatient Centre in Halifax.

FBM joins EllisDon Infrastructure Healthcare (EDIH) alongside Parkin Architects to design the 134,000 sq. ft. outpatient facility, the first building in a series of structures comprising the largest healthcare project in the province’s history.

The Centre is located on a 15-acre site in the Bayers Lake Business Park, approximately 20 minutes west of the Halifax peninsula, and offers services that do not require a hospital setting, like physiotherapy and occupational therapy, diagnostic imaging, blood collection, dialysis, and post-surgery primary care. The facility is scheduled for completion in August 2023.

“In Nova Scotia we’re not only facing the pressure to replace aging infrastructure, but there is also a need to expand on existing facilities to incorporate more innovative, inclusive, and sustainable features,” says Dennis Ramsay, FBM's Healthcare Division Lead.

The preliminary design has been well received by the Sponsors and reflects a more approachable scale than some of the structures at the Halifax Infirmary site. It will also feature regional vernacular in a more personal practitioner-patient setting.

The project is the first P3 healthcare project in Nova Scotia and one element of the broader QEII New Generation Project, a large-scale, phased, multi-year program that will redesign and build healthcare infrastructure in the Halifax Regional Municipality. The expansion includes a new QEII Cancer Centre, an expanded inpatient centre (hospital beds and operating rooms) and a new innovation and learning centre.

"We are more than excited to get started on this very important project for healthcare redevelopment in Nova Scotia. This is a very important project not only for the community, but for the entire province," said Shaun Stiles, Vice-President and Area Manager for Atlantic Canada.

Design, construction, financing and maintenance will be managed by EDIH, which is comprised of industry leading firms including EllisDon Capital (Developer and Equity Investor), EllisDon Corporation (Design Builder), Parkin Architects / FBM (Architects), and EllisDon Facilities Services (Service Provider).

FBM's healthcare division has steadily supported Atlantic Canada's healthcare planning and infrastructure including the Dr. William D. Finn Centre for Forensic Medicine. The team looks forward to working with clients and stakeholders towards the design, planning, and execution of this exciting new P3 initiative.
