Harvey Freeman retires after 50 years at FBM

We wish to congratulate our esteemed colleague and Partner at FBM, Harvey Freeman, on 50 years of architectural service, excellence, and leadership.
For nearly half the life of FBM itself, Harvey has been responsible for overseeing the firm’s envelope detailing and roofing reviews. Originally from Middleton, Nova Scotia, Harvey completed his studies in architecture at the Nova Scotia Technical College in 1970 (now Dalhousie University). He retires a member in good standing with the Nova Scotia Association of Architects and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.
Harvey leaves of legacy of sound building envelope science—a construction industry leader in this field, he was often brought in as a forensic expert on projects. He was made honorary member of the Roofing Contractors Association of Nova Scotia in 2019.
Acting as a mentor to the office, Harvey brought his unique expertise to all FBM projects. He developed a specialty area within the practice concentrating on roofing, masonry wall construction, and foundation waterproofing. He has had an influence on many FBM staff and his work has helped shape FBM’s reputation for quality, particularly as a well-respected member of the construction industry:
“One should be specific in a specification. Decide what you want and describe it in sufficient detail so there is no grey area.”
Harvey was also a frequent lecturer in the Continuing Education Department of Dalhousie University in their Technical Lecture series. He made numerous presentations regarding a designer’s perspective on the selection of an optimal roofing design.
A voracious reader, Harvey will be missed around the office for deep knowledge of local history and subjects far beyond architecture. We wish Harvey the best in his retirement and look forward to celebrating in person!
